dhā̆ bh-1, nasalized dhamb(h)-

dhā̆ bh-1, nasalized dhamb(h)-
    dhā̆ bh-1, nasalized dhamb(h)-
English meaning: to astonish, be speechless, *hit
Deutsche Übersetzung: ‘staunen, betreten, sprachlos sein”
Note: presumably as “beaten, be concerned “ from a basic meaning “hit” Probably common origin of Root dhü̆ bh-1, nasalized dhamb(h) - : to astonish, be speechless, *hit; Root dhebh-, dhebh-eu- : “to harm”, Root (dhembh-), dhm̥bh- : “to dig”, Root dhem-, dhemǝ- : “to smoke; to blow”.
Material: Gk. τάφος n. “ astonishment, surprise “, perf. ep. Ion. τέθηπα, participle Aor. ταφών “astonish”, θώπτω, θώπεύω (“gaze in wonder =) flatter “ (see Boisacq s. v. θώψ), nasalized θάμβος n. “ astonishment, amazement, fright”, θαμβέω “marvel, astonish, frighten”; to β compare Schwyzer Gk. I 333, 833; Goth. afdōbn “become silent!”. Under prerequisite a basic meaning “hit” can the following Gmc. family be added: O.N. dafla “ splash in the water “, Nor. dial. dabba “ stamp, tread down, trample, make a blunder “; Maybe Alb.Gheg zhdëp “beat, strike” O.N. an(d)dø̄ fa “ hold on a boat against wind and stream “, M.Eng. dabben, nEng. dab “hit lightly”, E.Fris. dafen “hit, knock, bump, poke”, M.H.G. beteben “ stun, wander about, press”, N.Ger. bedebbert “reprimand, flog, embarrassed”, Ger. tappen, Tapp “ flick “, M.H.G. tüpe “paw” (Gmc. ē, but not to use for statement of IE vocalism), M.Du. dabben “tap, splash” under likewise. However, see also Persson IF. 35, 202 f., several of these words with M.H.G. tappe “ clumsy, awkward; clumsy person” etc correlates in a Gmc. root dabb-, dēb(b)-, daƀ-, dap- “thick, lumpy”, from which “clumsy, stupid, doltish”, under comparison with Ltv. depis swearword, perhaps “ fool “, depe “ toad “ (“*the awkward”), depsis ‘small, fat boy” [maybe Alb. djep “cradle (for a baby)”] and Gmc. words, as Swe. dial. dabb “ tough lump of mucus “, dave “puddle, pool, slop” (: O.N. dafla ‘splash”?) etc (Ltv.dep- is perhaps a a change form to *dheb- in O.C.S. debelъ “thick” etc, compare Mũhlenbach-Endzelin I 455); it is to be counted on merger of different word cognates in Gmc. (see also under düi-, düp- “divide”); after Endzelin (KZ. 51, 290) places Eng. dab “tap” to Lith. dóbiu, dóbti “ beat to death “, Ltv. dübiu, dübt “hit”. maybe Alb. dëboj (*dobët ) “chase away”, i dobët (*u-dobьnъ) “emaciated, dainty, elegant, (beautiful)”, dobi “profit, advantage”.
Note: Alb. proves that Root dhabh-2 : “proper, * fitting, dainty” derived from Root dhü̆ bh-1, nasalized dhamb(h)- : “to astonish, be speechless, *hit” [see above]
